Bump Back: Research and Development, BPRD

Watari is a friendly, cheerful, outgoing person (and not just a little eccentric). His motto is "Smiles are free" and he likes helping his friends. He is rarely serious, and tends to regard complicated cases as a challenge. He enjoys research and conducting experiments of various sorts and is usually happiest in a lab, though he does not object to occasional fieldwork when he's needed. Though he prefers to just fill in if they're shorthanded, then turn the case over to a more capable field agent and retreat to his lab.

In his free time, if he's not tinkering with some doodad he's invented, he's working on his life-long dream of creating a gender-change serum... which he is not above testing on his friends. He can and will bribe people to be his guinea pigs, though he has been known to try the results of these experiments on himself. Sometimes, he gets a biiiiiiiiit overzealous a little careless, and accidents happen. But he hasn't blown anything up for months now.

Despite his normally carefree attitude, he is very devoted to his friends, and can be serious when the situation calls for it. Though he can be silly, his friends can depend on him to help them to the best of his ability. He's extremely intelligent, though he doesn't care much for fighting.

He is almost always in the company of his pet pygmy owl, 003.


Sorting Hat: Assistant Potions Professor

Watari is muggle-born, from a family of Japanese immigrants. Even as a young boy, he was fascinated by chemistry. And then he discovered he was a wizard, and that opened the door to the wonderful world of potions. Potions was always his best subject when he was in school. He approaches potions from an experimental stand-point: trying to improve existing potion formulas and trying to combine muggle chemistry with potions-making (if only to see what will happen). His dream is to come up with a gender-changing potion that has a more permanent effect than polyjuice and creates more than just a aesthetic change. When asked about it, he says that he wants to find out first-hand how the female mind works.

He has a natural talent for potions and his friendly personality and eagerness to explain things make him quite adept at teaching. He enjoys it quite a bit; however, he has never managed to obtain a full professorship. His experiments are sometimes unpredictable and occasionally react in... intensely interesting ways. Additionally, he will sometimes test the non-exploding potions on his friends and collegues. (Such potions never have a permanent effect, but it still makes others nervous on occasion.) He is essentially harmless, but considered a trifle irresponsible. He doesn't mind; being an assistant professor leaves him more time to conduct his research. During school holidays, he continues his research in a potions/chemistry lab he's set up in his home. He recently returned from a research trip/family visit to Japan. He has a tiny pygmy owl named 003 that is constantly perched on his shoulder.
